The days
Day of admission
The day before the operation or on its morning — both are possible, and we arrange it with you. Blood samples, ECG, physical examination, and the consultation with the anaesthesia team.
Day of the operation
You come in fasting. After the operation you go to the recovery room, then back to the ward. Light food is possible in the evening.
Day 1
First mobilisation, supported by the nursing team. Physiotherapy begins. The urinary catheter stays in place.
Day 2
You are increasingly on your feet. A drain, if one was placed, is removed as soon as it is no longer needed.
From day 3
Mobility keeps improving, and the join between bladder and urethra heals. You prepare for discharge.
Discharge
After five to six days. Before you leave, you talk to your surgeon once more. The histology result is discussed with you separately.
Pre-operative preparation — you usually come to us a day before the procedure.
Catheter and cystogram
After the operation a urinary catheter stays in place until the join between bladder and urethra has healed.
Before removal, a cystogram is always performed — an X-ray of the bladder with contrast medium. Only when it shows that the suture is watertight does removal become an option.
If the cystogram shows no leak and there is no medical reason against it, the catheter can be removed before you are discharged. That is the intended route, not a guaranteed one: if the join heals more slowly, the catheter stays longer — and is removed after a repeat cystogram. We decide this by your findings, not by the calendar.
Continence and potency
Already during your stay, a specialised continence and potency nurse is at your side. They show you the exercises, explain how to handle the catheter, and answer the questions people often do not ask on the ward round.

On the ward, nursing staff and doctors work closely together — pelvic floor training begins during your stay.
Rehabilitation (Anschlussheilbehandlung)
⚠ The rehabilitation programme should be applied for during your inpatient stay.
Raise it with us in the first days. For the application we need the name of your pension insurance provider and your insurance number; for privately insured patients, the details of the insurance; for civil servants, additionally the Beihilfe office.
